Short answer
If the L3AET felt comfortable, you already support other people’s learning, you want to teach in further education, your employer is raising expectations or you have bigger ambitions, the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (L4CET) is likely your next step.
If you are wondering whether the L4CET is right for you, here are five signs that it probably is.
The five signs
The L3AET felt natural rather than challenging
Every qualification has its stretches, and the L3AET is no exception. But if the ideas clicked quickly, the reflective writing came naturally and your tutor’s feedback was positive throughout, that tells you something.
It does not mean the work was not worthwhile. It means you are ready for more. The L4CET goes further into planning, theories of learning, inclusive practice and reflection. If the L3AET was comfortable, the L4CET is where you will be properly stretched.
You already mentor other learners or new colleagues
One of the clearest signs is that you have started supporting the people around you. If colleagues come to you with questions, you coach new starters or you have taken on any mentoring, that instinct is exactly what the L4CET builds on.
The L4CET looks more closely at how different people learn, how to adapt your teaching to different needs and how to design learning that develops people over time. It gives you the framework to do deliberately what you already do by instinct.
You want to teach in further education
The L3AET qualifies you to deliver training in a wide range of settings. If your goal is to teach in a further education college, deliver accredited programmes or hold a more senior teaching role, many colleges and providers look for a higher-level qualification.
If you are aiming for a college lecturer post, a lead trainer role or curriculum responsibility, the L4CET makes you a stronger candidate. See who hires L3AET and L4CET holders
Your employer is signalling that you should go further
In some sectors, expectations are becoming more explicit. Employers in health and social care, the public sector and further education increasingly ask training staff to hold higher-level qualifications.
If your organisation has mentioned development expectations, take the hint. Getting ahead of a requirement is almost always better than reacting to it, and it shows you take your development seriously.
You have bigger ambitions beyond your current role
Some people are happy delivering excellent training in a well-defined role, and that is completely valid. But if you find yourself thinking about designing programmes rather than delivering them, leading a team of trainers or working towards the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (L5DiT), those ambitions are telling you something.
The L4CET is the next rung. It broadens your knowledge, deepens your reflective practice and prepares you for the L5DiT, the full teaching qualification for the further education sector and the route towards QTLS.
What the L4CET involves
The L4CET is a larger qualification than the L3AET: 360 hours of Total Qualification Time, of which 140 are guided learning. It covers:
✓Theories, principles and models of learning and communication
✓Wider professional practice and the policy landscape
✓Planning, delivering and assessing inclusive learning
✓Reflecting on and evaluating your own practice
You also complete observed teaching practice in a real setting, with at least 30 teaching hours available to you over the duration of the course. You need to be teaching, or have access to teaching, while you study. For entry, you need Level 2 English and Maths, or a short personal statement explaining how you use English and Maths day to day and at work.
Like every course, the L4CET is fully online and self-paced, with 365 days of access and a named tutor throughout.
People who progress fastest rarely wait for the perfect moment. They take the next step when they are ready.
If several of these sound like you
The next step is simple: look at the L4CET, ask us any questions and get started. If you are deciding between the L4CET and the L5DiT, read L3AET, L4CET or L5DiT: which one do you actually need? From everything above, it sounds like you might be ready.
Questions people ask
Do I need the L3AET before the L4CET?
It helps, and it is the usual route. Check the entry requirements on the L4CET page or Book a Call if you are unsure.
Can I go straight to the L5DiT?
Some people do. It depends on your role and how much teaching you have access to.
Do I need to be teaching while I study the L4CET?
Yes. The L4CET includes observed teaching practice in a real setting.
