#1 – See yourself here
You may already teach a vocational course and mark the work that comes out of it. You may have been told to get qualified before you can sign off achievement. Or your employer may be qualifying a team of assessors. Start with the right qualification for your next step.
If you run skills tests, question learners and mark assignments and projects, this Award qualifies the judgement you are already making.
You assess two learners on a vocationally related programme, four assessments in total, in your own subject area, covering at least three different assessment methods.
If you assess competence in a live workplace rather than a training environment, L3AACWE is the better fit. If you do both, buy L3CAVA. We will tell you that before you pay, not after.

It is the assessor qualification for people who assess vocational skills, knowledge and understanding away from the live workplace. It suits:

Three groups make up most of our intake.
✓Tutors and trainers
Teaching a vocational course in a college or training provider and marking the work that comes out of it.
✓Practical-skills instructors
Beauty, hair and aesthetics, first aid, health and safety, fitness and coaching – anyone running skills tests in a training room.
✓Employers buying seats

A classroom, training room or workshop – anywhere that is not the live workplace. If you are assessing someone doing their actual job, that is occupational competence and the qualification you need is L3AACWE.

Yes. It is Ofqual-regulated and accepted by employers across the UK. British qualifications are well regarded internationally and Ofqual-regulated qualifications are accepted by many employers and organisations outside the UK. Recognition overseas is decided by each country or employer, so check with them if you plan to work abroad. Check it on the Ofqual Register (GOV.UK)

Yes. You need access to two learners on a vocationally related training programme whom you can assess in a classroom, training room or workshop, in your own subject area. You carry out four assessments in total, two per learner, covering at least three different assessment methods. If you do not have learners yet, start with L3AUPPA and upgrade later – the fee is credited.

Yes and you arrange it. Your learners need to consent to being recorded and your employer needs to be content with filming in the training room. It is worth settling both before you enrol – it is the one thing that most often delays a start.

The knowledge unit is assessed by scenario-based written questions with short answers. The practical unit is assessed on your four real assessments – three recorded, one observed live and remotely. Your tutor marks submissions within 24 to 72 hours. Two further attempts per theory assessment are included and any of the four practical assessments can be resubmitted once, at no extra cost.

Your four assessments must cover at least three different methods from:
We usually recommend skills tests, oral and written questions and assessments in simulated environments, but your tutor will agree the mix with you based on the programme you teach.

Three of your four assessments are submitted as video recordings. The fourth is observed live and remotely by your tutor on a video call. Nobody has to travel and no visitor comes into your training room. You or a colleague can film the recordings, as long as both you and your learner are clearly audible.

Within 24 to 72 hours, often the next day. Weekends and public holidays are not counted. Most providers take 2 to 3 weeks.

Each assessment is a Pass or a Refer. A Refer comes with clear pointers to put it right, and you get three attempts at each theory assessment and two at each practical one.

Often, yes, if it still meets today's criteria. Tell us what you have before you enrol and we will check it. See our Recognition of Prior Learning Policy.

Yes. Desktop, laptop, tablet or phone, and your progress syncs. For writing and uploading assessments, a laptop or computer is easiest.

Holding both is equivalent to the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (L3CAVA).

Y Awards (previously YMCA Awards) Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement. There is no mention of the mode of study on the certificate, so class-based and online learners receive the same certificate.
