Before you pay – read this bit
L3CAVA is the complete assessor qualification. It covers assessing occupational competence in a live work environment and assessing vocational skills, knowledge and understanding in a classroom, training room or workshop. If you assess in only one of those settings, the single Award is enough – and if you assess in both, this is the qualification employers and awarding organisations ask for by name.
Three units, both practical routes and one certificate. You are qualified to assess wherever the assessment happens.
Covering both settings in a single course, with one registration, one tutor and one set of resources.
Employers and awarding organisations name L3CAVA when they approve assessors. It is the qualification that removes the question.
Three mandatory units, 15 credits, 150 hours total qualification time, as set by Y Awards (previously YMCA Awards).
You are aged 19 or over
You have access to two candidates on a work-based training programme whom you can assess in the workplace
You have access to two learners on a vocationally related programme whom you can assess in a classroom, training room or workshop
The same two people can cover both settings, where their programme allows it
You can record assessments on video and join live video calls for the two observed assessments
You arrange permission from your candidates, learners and employer to record assessments
You have a basic to intermediate command of the English language – you will be writing responses to scenario-based assessments
You have a basic working knowledge of how to use a computer (clicking items, downloading and uploading documents, etc.)
You are self-motivated and can study independently with some tutor support
In-house and class based
This page describes the online course. We also deliver it class based at your own site for groups of six or more, with the taught part face to face and the rest finished online. Class based delivery is only available as a corporate booking.

It is the complete assessor qualification, for people who assess in both a live work environment and a training environment. It suits:

Three groups make up most of our intake.
✓Assessors working in both settings
Assessing competence on the job and skills in a training room and needing one qualification for both.
✓Tutors, supervisors and mentors
Already delivering and checking work and required to hold the full assessor qualification.
✓Employers buying seats
Qualifying an internal assessment team in one batch, invoiced on your terms. No minimum numbers required. Visit our Corporate page

On successful completion of the course, you will:

Yes. It is Ofqual-regulated and accepted by employers across the UK. British qualifications are well regarded internationally and Ofqual-regulated qualifications are accepted by many employers and organisations outside the UK. Recognition overseas is decided by each country or employer, so check with them if you plan to work abroad. Check it on the Ofqual Register (GOV.UK)

Learners typically progress to:

Yes. You need access to two candidates on a work-based programme whom you can assess in the workplace and two learners on a vocationally related programme whom you can assess in a classroom, training room or workshop. The same two people can cover both settings where their programme allows it. If you are not there yet, start with a single Award and upgrade later – the fee is credited.

Yes and you arrange it. Your candidates and learners need to consent to being recorded and your employer needs to be content with filming at work and in the training room. It is worth settling both before you enrol – it is the one thing that most often delays a start.

Yes. Tell us what helps you and we will make reasonable adjustments. See our Accessibility and Reasonable Adjustments Policy.

Unit 1 is assessed by scenario-based written questions with short answers. Units 2 and 3 are assessed on your eight real assessments – six recorded, two observed live and remotely. Your tutor marks submissions within 24 to 72 hours. Two further attempts per theory assessment are included and any of the eight practical assessments can be resubmitted once, at no extra cost.

Eight in total: four for Unit 2 (occupational competence in the work environment) and four for Unit 3 (vocational skills, knowledge and understanding). Two assessments per person in each unit.

Three of the four assessments in each practical unit are submitted as video recordings. The fourth in each unit is observed live and remotely by your tutor on a video call – two live observations in total. Nobody has to travel and no visitor comes on site. You or a colleague can film the recordings, as long as both you and the person you are assessing are clearly audible.

Within 24 to 72 hours, often the next day. Weekends and public holidays are not counted. Most providers take 2 to 3 weeks.

Each assessment is a Pass or a Refer. A Refer comes with clear pointers to put it right, and you get three attempts at each theory assessment and two at each practical one.

Today. On weekdays (9 am to 5 pm) your course invitation arrives within 10 to 15 minutes; book at the weekend or on a public holiday and it arrives by the next working day. Receive your invite, fill your application form, upload your photo ID and begin.

Yes, by all means. We allow you to start within 30 days of receiving the invite. Beyond that, a re-invite fee of £60 including VAT applies.

It is a 150-hour qualification. Unit 1 is usually finished in two to four weeks. The practical units depend on your candidates and your timetable, so most learners finish everything in three to four months, depending on candidate availability. You have 365 days and there is no penalty for using them.

Yes. Desktop, laptop, tablet or phone, and your progress syncs. For writing and uploading assessments, a laptop or computer is easiest.

A named tutor from start to finish. Email or phone us Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, and we reply to emails within 24 hours. Live calls are there when you need them.

Most learners finish well inside the year. If life gets in the way, extend 30 days at a time for an Extension fee of £125 + VAT.
