Short answer
To deliver training to colleagues, start with the L3AET. To assess colleagues against occupational standards, take the L3CAVA, or the L3AACWE if you only assess by observing people at work. You do not need a teaching background, and you study online around your shifts.
Whether you are a nurse, a carer, a paramedic, a mental health practitioner or a team leader in a care home, your sector needs experienced people who can pass on their knowledge properly. Most health and social care professionals are not sure where to start with getting formally qualified as a trainer or assessor. This guide clears that up.
Why a teaching qualification matters in health and social care
Health and social care is one of the most heavily regulated industries in the UK. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspects services in England and looks closely at staff training records. Inspectors want to see that training happens and that the people delivering it are competent to do so.
Without a recognised qualification, your standing as an in-house trainer is easier to question, and your employer has less to show when training is checked. A teaching or assessing qualification gives you formal standing to deliver, design and sign off training in your organisation.
Which qualification do you need?
It depends on what you do now, or what you want to do next.
You deliver training: the L3AET
If you run induction days, deliver manual handling or safeguarding sessions, mentor new starters or present at team development sessions, the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (L3AET) is your starting point. It is the recognised entry-level teaching qualification for further education, workplace training and community settings.
You learn how to plan sessions, adapt your delivery to different learners and check that learning has happened. View the L3AET
You assess colleagues: the L3CAVA or L3AACWE
If your role involves assessing colleagues against care qualifications, carrying out competency checks or confirming that staff meet occupational standards, you need an assessor qualification.
The Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (L3CAVA) is the full assessor qualification and the one most employers name. It already includes the L3AACWE, so you never need both. If you only ever assess by watching people do the real job, the Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment (L3AACWE) on its own may be enough. View the L3CAVA
You lead learning and development: both
People in learning and development roles in NHS trusts and larger care groups often end up holding both a teaching and an assessing qualification. Many start with the L3AET and add the L3CAVA later.
Not sure which?
The Course Quiz asks your industry and role and suggests the best fit, with the next courses worth considering. It takes about a minute.
Do you need a teaching background to enrol?
No, and this surprises many people when they first ask.
What you need is solid professional experience in your field, not a background in education. If you already mentor colleagues, lead inductions, supervise practice or stand up in front of a room to share what you know, you are doing much of what the qualification formalises.
Most of our learners come to us as experienced practitioners who are ready to make their training role official. The qualification gives them the language, the structure and the recognised certificate to do it with confidence. We do expect Level 2 English (around GCSE) in your written work.
You are not starting from zero. You are putting a formal framework around skills you have been building for years.
How the course works around shifts
Every course is fully online and self-paced. You can study on a laptop or desktop computer, and there are no timetables or live sessions to attend. That matters in health and social care, where shift patterns, nights and on-call duties make a fixed study schedule almost impossible.
You start within 30 days of booking and then have 365 days of access. You study when it suits you, submit your work online and a named tutor marks it within 24 to 72 hours. You can email, phone or book a live call with your tutor whenever you are stuck.

What it could do for your career
A recognised teaching qualification makes you the credible, go-to trainer in your organisation: the natural choice to lead induction programmes, develop in-house training materials and manage ongoing staff development. It also gives you something concrete to point to when you apply for a new role or ask for a pay review.
For some learners it leads to a new job title or a dedicated training role. For others it opens work with private training providers, care sector consultancies or approved centres. See who hires L3AET and L4CET holders.
Who pays?
Before you pay yourself, ask your employer. Many health and social care organisations have training budgets for qualifications exactly like these, and a short conversation with your line manager or HR team could cover the full cost. Your employer can request an invoice and pay by Bank Transfer, with a multiple-booking discount of 5% for 3 to 4 staff and 10% for 5 or more. See can my employer pay for my course?.
If you are paying yourself, you can pay in full or spread the cost with PayPal Pay in 3 or Pay in 30 days. See how PayPal Pay Later works on our courses.

If you work in health or social care and you are ready to become a qualified trainer or assessor, we would love to support you. Look at the L3AET and the L3CAVA, take the Course Quiz or Book a Call to talk through which route fits where you are now and where you want to be.

How long do I have to finish?
You start within 30 days of booking and have 365 days of access to the online course.
