Short answer
Most health and social care assessors take the L3CAVA, the full assessor qualification, or the L3AACWE if they only ever assess by watching people at work. You need experience in the area you assess and two candidates you can assess. Everything else is online, around your shifts.
Step 1: Know what the qualification covers
An assessor judges whether someone has met an occupational standard. In health and social care that usually means:
✓Observing a colleague carry out a care task and judging whether they meet the standard
✓Holding professional discussions to check their knowledge and understanding
✓Reviewing work products such as care plans and records as evidence
✓Making and recording formal assessment decisions against the qualification or standard
The Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment (L3AACWE) covers assessing people doing the real job. The Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (L3CAVA) includes the L3AACWE and adds assessing in training rooms and classrooms, so it is the one most employers name. L3CAVA or a single assessor award?
Step 2: Check you are eligible
You need to be aged 19 or over and occupationally competent in the area you will assess: experienced, and qualified where your sector expects it. You do not need a previous assessor qualification, a teaching background or a degree.
You also need two candidates on a work-based programme whom you can assess, and permission from them and your employer to record the assessments. If you are not in an assessing role yet, talk to us before you enrol and we will tell you honestly whether the timing is right.
Step 3: Choose your provider
Providers deliver assessor qualifications very differently. Look for:
✓Self-paced delivery that fits around shifts
✓Clear assessment guidance and templates
✓A named tutor and a clear marking turnaround
✓Direct Claims Status with the awarding organisation, so your certificate is not held up
With us, work is marked within 24 to 72 hours and, because we hold Direct Claims Status, your certificate usually arrives 2 to 3 weeks after you complete.
Step 4: Enrol and look around
On a weekday your invitation to the online course arrives within 10 to 15 minutes. Everything is in one place: lessons, assessment briefs, templates and the place to upload your work. Spend your first week reading through the whole course so nothing surprises you later.
Step 5: Complete the theory
The theory unit is answered through scenario-based written questions, not long essays. It covers the principles of assessment, the methods you can use, planning, feedback, record keeping and the legal and ethical side of assessing.
Step 6: Carry out your assessments
This is the practical part. With your two candidates you plan, carry out and record four assessments using methods such as observation, questioning, professional discussion and examining work products. Three are recorded on video and one is watched live by your tutor on a video call.
Health and social care staff often find this easier than they expect, because the skills overlap with supervision, appraisals and the competency checks they already do.
Before you start the practical
✓Agree who your two candidates are.
✓Get written permission to record.
✓Plan when each assessment will happen.
Step 7: Submit and achieve
Each piece of work comes back as a Pass or a Refer. A Refer comes with clear pointers, and you have three attempts at each theory assessment and two at each practical one. Once everything is signed off, we claim your certificate.
You already make judgements about colleagues’ practice every shift. The qualification makes them count.
What comes next
Many assessors go on to internal quality assurance with the L4AIQAAPP. Others add the L3AET so they can teach as well as assess. Do you need an IQA qualification?
Your employer can request an invoice and pay by Bank Transfer, with a multiple-booking discount of 5% for 3 to 4 staff and 10% for 5 or more. See can my employer pay for my course?.
