The part that stalls people

Doing the quality assurance is not the same as leading on it.

Awarding organisations will not name you as a centre’s lead internal quality assurer without a recognised lead IQA qualification, however long you have run sampling and standardisation. It is the box on the centre approval form.

Without the L4CLIQAAPP
  • ✗Sampling decisions someone else has to countersign
  • ✗Centres cannot name you as their lead quality assurer
  • ✗Leading a quality team stays informal and unrecognised
With the L4CLIQAAPP
  • ✓Named as lead IQA and ready for the EQA visit
  • ✓The lead IQA qualification, quality assurance and leadership
  • ✓Leading a quality team becomes formal and recognised

Other reasons they love us for

#1 – See yourself here

Is L4CLIQAAPP right for you?

A lead IQA works on two levels: quality assuring the assessors and leading the IQAs who quality assure them. You may already do both without the qualification behind it. You may be stepping up to lead the team. Or your centre may need a qualified lead IQA before its next EQA visit.

1: You Already Lead On Quality

Build on the sampling you do with assessors and the steer you give other IQAs and add the qualification centres and awarding organisations ask for by name.

2: Built Around Your Own Team

Plan and carry out real monitoring activities with your own assessors, hold a standardisation meeting with your IQAs and produce a work plan for the area you are responsible for.

3: Honest Advice Before Enrolling

Not leading a team yet? We will point you to the L4AUIQAAPP or the practical L4AIQAAPP instead of selling you the full certificate.

Questions people actually ask

Pick a topic to open its answers

Who should do this course?

It is the lead IQA qualification, for people who quality assure assessors and manage the people who do it. It suits:

  • Lead IQAs and quality managers accountable for sampling and standardisation
  • IQAs stepping up to manage other quality assurers
  • Heads of centre and centre managers responsible for the quality function
  • Training providers preparing for an EQA visit
  • Employers qualifying an internal quality function in one batch - see our Corporate page
Who enrols on this course?

Three groups make up most of our intake.

✓Lead IQAs and quality managers
Accountable for sampling, standardisation and the assessors who carry it out.

✓IQAs stepping up to lead
Quality assuring already and now managing the people who do it.

✓Heads of centre and employers
Responsible for the quality function and for what the EQA finds or qualifying that team in one batch.

Who is this course 'NOT' for?
  • You do not currently lead or manage assessors or IQAs
  • You quality assure but have no team to plan work for – the L4AIQAAPP is your qualification
  • You only need the theory – the knowledge Award costs a good deal less
  • You are aged under 19
  • You do not have a basic to intermediate command of the English language
  • You struggle to motivate yourself or find it difficult to study without constant support
What will I be able to do by the end?

On successful completion of the course, you will:

  • Understand the functions, principles and regulations of internal quality assurance and the roles of everyone involved
  • Plan monitoring activities and make the arrangements to carry them out
  • Evaluate assessor expertise, assessment planning, methods and decisions and compare decisions for consistency
  • Provide assessors with feedback, advice, support and professional development
  • Apply standardisation procedures across assessment practice and outcomes
  • Record, store and report IQA information and maintain its confidentiality
  • Produce a work plan for your own area of responsibility and agree SMART objectives with team members
  • Monitor progress and quality of work and give your team feedback
Is the L4CLIQAAPP recognised?

Yes. It is Ofqual-regulated and accepted by employers across the UK. British qualifications are well regarded internationally and Ofqual-regulated qualifications are accepted by many employers and organisations outside the UK. Recognition overseas is decided by each country or employer, so check with them if you plan to work abroad. Check it on the Ofqual Register (GOV.UK)

Do I need an assessor qualification first?

Y Awards (previously YMCA Awards) recommends experience of or prior qualifications in, assessment and internal quality assurance, but does not require them. In practice almost everyone who takes this holds an assessor qualification already, because the units assume you know how assessment works from the inside.

Do I have to be managing a team already?

Yes. Unit 3 is assessed on the area of responsibility you actually lead – a work plan, agreed responsibilities and objectives with your team members and monitoring their progress. You need to currently lead or manage assessors or IQAs to evidence it. If you are not there yet, the L4AIQAAPP covers the quality assurance work without the leadership unit.

What do I need access to?

Two assessors and their candidates whose work you can sample, plus other IQAs you oversee for the standardisation meeting in Unit 3.

Do you support learners with dyslexia or other needs?

Yes. Tell us what helps you and we will make reasonable adjustments. See our Accessibility and Reasonable Adjustments Policy.

How do the assessments work?

Unit 1 by scenario-based written questions with short answers. Units 2 and 3 on your real quality assurance and leadership practice, evidenced through your sampling records, work plan and two live remote observations. Your tutor marks submissions within 24 to 72 hours. Two further attempts per theory assessment are included and any practical element can be resubmitted once, at no extra cost.

What do I actually have to submit?

Three things:

  • Unit 1: scenario-based written questions with short answers
  • Unit 2: sampling of two assessors across four monitoring activities, with one live remote observation of your IQA practice
  • Unit 3: a work plan for your own team and a standardisation meeting with your IQAs that you plan and conduct, observed live and remotely
How do the observations work?

Both are live and remote, on a video call with your tutor – one of your internal quality assurance practice, one of your standardisation meeting. Nobody travels and no visitor comes on site. You arrange consent from your assessors, candidates and employer for the evidence you submit.

How fast is my work marked?

Within 24 to 72 hours, often the next day. Weekends and public holidays are not counted. Most providers take 2 to 3 weeks.

Can I fail?

Each assessment is a Pass or a Refer. A Refer comes with clear pointers to put it right, and you get three attempts at each theory assessment and two at each practical one.

How soon can I start?

Today. On weekdays (9 am to 5 pm) your course invitation arrives within 10 to 15 minutes; book at the weekend or on a public holiday and it arrives by the next working day. Receive your invite, fill your application form, upload your photo ID and begin.

Can I start at a later date after making the payment?

Yes, by all means. We allow you to start within 30 days of receiving the invite. Beyond that, a re-invite fee of £60 including VAT applies.

How long does it actually take?

It is a 170-hour qualification. Most learners finish in three to five months, depending on when they can carry out monitoring activities and hold their standardisation meeting. You have 365 days and there is no penalty for using them.

Can I study on my phone?

Yes. Desktop, laptop, tablet or phone, and your progress syncs. For writing and uploading assessments, a laptop or computer is easiest.

What support will I get?

A named tutor from start to finish. Email or phone us Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, and we reply to emails within 24 hours. Live calls are there when you need them.

What if I need more than 365 days?

Most learners finish well inside the year. If life gets in the way, extend 30 days at a time for an Extension fee of £125 + VAT.
