About Level Training Academy

Level Training Academy, based in Padiham, Lancashire, delivers vocational training, assessment, workforce competence and compliance services across a growing range of sectors. Its expertise is in highways electrical training and assessment, helping employers build qualified, compliant and audit-ready workforces.

The challenge

As the business grew, Managing Director Daniel Childs wanted his technically skilled team to hold nationally recognised teaching and assessing qualifications, to strengthen the team’s formal teaching and assessment capability and support Level’s continued growth. Turning experienced site practitioners into qualified trainers and assessors brought a few practical hurdles.

Technical experts formalising their practice

The team already brought significant occupational expertise and practical experience. The qualifications provided a recognised framework for developing and formalising teaching and assessment practice.

Sector context

The qualification content applies across a broad range of vocational sectors, so Level needed the learning to apply meaningfully to street lighting, traffic signals, roadside working and genuine highways assessment activity.

Busy delivery and site schedules

Staff were already supporting clients across the North West, so long blocks away from work were not an option.

Audit-ready assessment practice

The L3AACWE requires observed assessments in a real work environment, backed by evidence that stands up to internal and external quality assurance.

What we did

We worked together. We delivered the qualifications online; Level Training Academy provided workplace mentoring, sector context and oversight of workplace assessment practice. Nobody had to travel to an external training centre.

Qualifications matched to each role

The L3AET built the core skills of planning, delivering and evaluating inclusive sessions. The L3AACWE developed the skills to plan, carry out and record competence assessments in the workplace.

Learning around work

Candidates could study the theory on our 24/7 online platform at any time, planning their learning around their day-to-day responsibilities.

Live remote observations

Candidates demonstrated their teaching and assessment skills in their own workplace, with our assessors observing remotely.

Highways context, added by Level

Level contextualised the learning to the highways electrical sector through candidates’ micro-teach sessions, real workplace assessment activity and ongoing internal support.

Tutor guidance and workplace support

We provided assignment feedback, qualification guidance and remote observation. Level arranged workplace assessment opportunities and internal mentoring, helping candidates meet the requirements of Level’s awarding body.

✓Four qualified, two progressing: two staff achieved the L3AET and two achieved the L3AACWE, with two more continuing towards the L3AACWE. All four candidates who completed achieved their qualification, and there have been no withdrawals.

✓Qualified to support delivery and assessment: Level can now deploy suitably qualified staff within its approved training and assessment arrangements.

✓Expanded in-house capability: a larger qualified internal training and assessment team gives Level more control over quality, scheduling and workforce development.

✓Robust assessment practice: candidates now plan, carry out and record workplace assessment in a more structured way, supported by Level’s internal mentoring and oversight against its own awarding body requirements.

✓Real-world relevance: highways-specific micro-teach sessions and genuine workplace assessments let candidates apply the theory directly to their roles.

✓No travel to an external centre: online study and live remote observations meant candidates kept supporting operational delivery throughout the programme.

In their words

Daniel ChildsManaging Director, Level Training Academy

“Working with The Teacher Trainer has provided Level Training Academy with a flexible route to develop the formal teaching and assessment qualifications within our team. Their online model has worked well around our operational commitments, and the team have been approachable and supportive throughout the programmes.

The qualifications themselves provide the underpinning knowledge and structure, while a significant part of making that learning meaningful for our staff has been contextualising it internally at Level. We have supported candidates in applying the theory through highways-specific micro-teach sessions and genuine workplace assessments. Our role has included mentoring candidates and overseeing their workplace assessment practice to support compliance with Level’s own awarding body requirements.

That combination has worked well. The Teacher Trainer has provided the qualification delivery and tutor support, while we have brought the sector expertise, workplace opportunities and practical guidance needed to apply that learning within our environment. The result is additional qualified trainers and assessors within Level and a stronger platform for developing our own training and assessment capability.”
