The part that stalls people

Experience is what you have. A certificate is what they ask for.

Colleges, training providers and most employers will not put you in front of a group without a recognised teaching qualification. It is the box on the application form – no amount of delivery you have already done fills it in.

Without the L3AET
  • ✗Applications screened out before an interview
  • ✗Training you already deliver counts informally
  • ✗No route onto a college or provider's books
With the L3AET
  • ✓The recognised entry qualification for the sector
  • ✓Training you already deliver counts formally
  • ✓The starting point for L4CET and L5DiT later

Who is this course 'NOT' for?
  • You are aged under 19
  • You do not have a basic to intermediate command of the English language
  • You do not have a good working knowledge of how to use technology
  • You are not comfortable with technology or do not enjoy learning on a screen – reading, researching and watching videos
  • You struggle to motivate yourself or find it difficult to study without constant support
  • You rely heavily on face-to-face interaction and find it difficult to progress independently
What will I be able to do by the end?

On successful completion of the course, you will:

  • Understand your own roles, responsibilities and boundaries in relation to teaching/training
  • Understand appropriate teaching and learning approaches within a specialist area
  • Demonstrate session planning skills. Plan, deliver, observe and evaluate a micro-teach session
  • Understand how to deliver inclusive sessions that motivate learners
  • Understand the use of different assessment methods
  • Understand and analyse the need for accurate record keeping and procedures, including internal and external verification
What can I teach with the L3AET?

Any course up to Level 2 in a subject you already hold a qualification in, such as First Aid, Security or Beauty. Your experience plus the L3AET is a strong combination.

Is the L3AET recognised?

Yes. It is regulated by Ofqual, CCEA and Qualifications Wales and accepted by employers across the UK. British qualifications are well regarded internationally and Ofqual-regulated qualifications are accepted by many employers and organisations outside the UK. Recognition overseas is decided by each country or employer, so check with them if you plan to work abroad. Check it on the Ofqual Register (GOV.UK)

Does it let me teach in schools?

Not state schools. It opens the door to colleges, training providers and workplace training, teaching learners aged 14 or over. State schools need Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). To teach in schools, see Get into School Teaching (GOV.UK).

Was this course known by another name?

Yes. Earlier versions were:

  • Level 3 Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS)
  • Level 4 Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS)
What comes after the Level 3?

The qualification allows candidates to progress into employment as teachers/trainers, as well as to the following qualifications:

  • Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training
  • Level 5 Diploma in Teaching
  • Level 3 and 4 Awards, Certificates and Diplomas in Learning and Development
  • Level 3 Assessment and Level 4 Quality Assurance
  • Awards in Planning and Delivering Training Sessions
  • Awards/Certificate for Learning Support Practitioners
  • English for Literacy and Language Teaching / Mathematics for Numeracy Teaching
Do you support learners with dyslexia or other needs?

Yes. Tell us what helps you and we will make reasonable adjustments. See our Accessibility and Reasonable Adjustments Policy.

How do the assessments work?

Short scenario-based questions for each unit (no long essays) and one micro-teach of at least 15 minutes on a topic you know well.

What is the micro-teach?

The micro-teach in the L3AET is a short, practice teaching session – lasting a minimum of 15 minutes – where you teach a topic of your choice to a small group of at least 2 learners aged 14 or over, such as your peers, fellow trainees, adult family members or friends. It acts as a friendly “test drive” designed to show that you can plan a short lesson, engage learners with an interactive activity and evaluate how well it went based on feedback from your observer and learners. You can pick almost any topic you know well and you do not need real-world teaching experience to do it.

Can I record my micro-teach?

Yes, that is how it works online. Gather at least 2 learners aged 14 or over (colleagues, friends or family are fine), hit record and upload. You have one resubmission, so prepare well.

How fast is my work marked?

Within 24 to 72 hours, often the next day. Weekends and public holidays are not counted. Most providers take 2 to 3 weeks.

Can I fail?

Each assessment is a Pass or a Refer. A Refer comes with clear pointers to put it right, and you get three attempts at each theory assessment and two at the micro-teach.

Can I use work from an earlier course?

Often, yes, if it still meets today's criteria. Tell us what you have before you enrol and we will check it. See our Recognition of Prior Learning Policy.

How is this different from a free or cheap AET course online?

Free or very cheap AET courses typically offer a PDF and a multiple-choice quiz. They pass a qualification but don't build the competence to teach. Our course includes professionally produced AV lessons, original infographics, real UK FE case studies from 35+ industries, observation of your micro-teach and 24-72 hours personal marking from tutors who currently work in FE. The certificate says the same thing on paper. The teacher you become is very different.

How soon can I start?

Today. On weekdays (9 am to 5 pm) your course invitation arrives within 10 to 15 minutes; book at the weekend or on a public holiday and it arrives by the next working day. Receive your invite, fill your application form, upload your photo ID and begin.

Can I start at a later date after making the payment?

Yes, by all means. We allow you to start within 30 days of receiving the invite. Beyond that, a re-invite fee of £60 including VAT applies.

How long does it actually take?

Some learners who do it full-time finish it within 2-3 weeks.
Most learners who do it part-time finish it in 1 to 2 months.
You have 365 days and there is no penalty for using them.

What support will I get?

A named tutor from start to finish. Email or phone us Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, and we reply to emails within 24 hours. Live calls are there when you need them.

What if I need more than 365 days?

Most learners finish well inside the year. If life gets in the way, extend 30 days at a time for an Extension fee of £125 + VAT.

What are the benefits of online learning?
  • Powerful visual cues and experiential exercises that make learning better & faster
  • Always available – a course that is as close as a computer with an internet connection
  • Control the learning environment – you set your own pace and schedule
  • Allows flexibility – with no set class times, you decide when to complete your assessments and learning
  • A cheaper course than traditional college courses – with no hotel/housing, meal plans or travel expenses to worry about
  • No interruptions in your job/career if you are currently busy working/teaching
  • No need to take a leave of absence in order to go back to college
  • No need to go to the classroom course over a number of days
  • No need to worry about the teacher's absences or the effects of other learners (good or bad)
